TADA Advanced Tests - A Tutorial

Following on from my previous tutorial and the public release of TA-DA, I'd like to present a new tutorial based on 2 of our more complicated tests: Usable Display Height and Usable Display Width. [read more...]

Building Mobile Websites - Working with Color

This article discusses the role of color in mobile web pages. I believe that color used effectively allows for visually communicating information about a page without having to take up additional space within the page. As everyone learns whether a mobile web user or a mobile web developer, screen real estate is at a premium in the mobile web environment. Therefore, finding ways to leverage something like color to communicate such things as page structure and site context is a boon to the mobile web developer. [read more...]

DeviceAtlas - TADA!

The Test Application (or “test suite", as it is also known) for DeviceAtlas is a system that has been developed which provides you, the user, with the opportunity to input device specific data directly into our system.

This simple process is demonstrated below in a step-by-step introduction to “My First Test Session" , so read on to find out more. [read more...]

Creating Mobile Web Sites with Google App Engine

app engineBy now most people have heard of Google's App Engine (GAE). In case you haven't, GAE lets you run your own web applications on Google's extensive network of servers meaning that you can scale your application as traffic demands, with no hardware headaches, no machine provisioning, no LAMP stacks, no Apache configurations. So far the buzz has been very positive -- with some notable exceptions (Python only for now, no way to schedule tasks on the server) GAE has been well-received by desktop web developers.

But What About Mobile?

So what about the 1.3 billion mobile web devices? Can GAE be used for that also? The short answer is yes, of course, GAE can be made to emit mobile pages also. But to create a mobile web application that really delivers a good experience to end users you need to build in device detection. [read more...]

Content Delivery for Mobile Devices

In the past, delivering content to mobile devices has been a very tricky subject. Developers who came into the mobile world were usually confronted with a new and unknown paradigm, where very little information could be found on how to determine devices' capabilities and to deliver content to them. It was something completely new, and it looked like this information was kept secretly as a precious treasure by those few who had been able to learn it. The aim of this article is to introduce practical examples on how to deliver content to Mobile Devices, making use of sample source code where possible. [read more...]

An Operator Decides to be Polite…

Ronan_Mandel's picture

Say what you will about the network operators with whom we have to play in the mobile space, but every now and again they do think of the developer community before implementing changes that may impact us all. Case in point, our friends over at AT&T devCentral recently sent out an announcement to the developer community about changes that will be coming as a result of some modifications to their gateway. TADA - Alive and kicking, and DA 2.0 (preview)

daniel.hunt's picture

The DeviceAtlas 2.0 Preview was released on Monday, and with it, access to our TA-DA test suite was opened up to the unwashed masses.

A total of 5 new test have been added to the list, which is due grow further with the full 2.0 release due in the coming weeks. An interesting result of these new tests, will (hopefully) be a more accurate representation of which devices support the controversial "SMSTO:" URI, "SMS:" URI, or both. [read more...]

DeviceAtlas 2.0 PREVIEW

atrasatti's picture

Back in June we announced the launch of TA-DA, our own test suite for mobile devices. We followed up with a little tutorial.

Despite the summer, the sun and everything else (ok, alright, there is not much sun in Ireland, but we DO go on vacation sometimes) we worked hard in the last couple of months and in fact we are ready to release yet another improvement to DeviceAtlas. Today we are opening TA-DA to all our users, so everyone is now welcome to visit ta-da.mobi and test his device. We think this is a core component of DeviceAtlas, it is the centerpiece of a proper device data collection, so we would like to see many users every day testing their devices. [read more...]

The Growing Mobile Web

Cyril's picture

Since the beginning of the find.mobi project, I've been charged with building its index, and so I've been crawling a lot of web sites. This has given me a good vantage point from which to view the growth of the mobile web, and to notice general trends. The overall impression I have today is of a continuous growth in content and new sites, but no tidal wave just yet. [read more...]
